What to Consider When Choosing Where to Retire

Choosing where to retire is an important life decision and not an easy task. The right retirement destination can lead to years of contentment; the wrong choice can cause you to miss out on pursuing your passions as you are burdened with additional expenses. Several factors to mull over when choosing your retirement destination include a country's economic and political stability, cultural issues, and whether or not the country offers particular retirement benefit programs. Finding the right place to settle not only involves researching the financial issues of retirement but also the quality-of-life issues most important to you.

What you may want to research if you are considering living outside the United States is whether the country offers a "pensionado program." These programs are designed for retiree's or other foreign residents who receive at least $500 a month in foreign income (social security, disability, private or government pensions etc). If enrolled in one of these programs, exceptional benefits are available including tax breaks, discounts on medical care, public transportation, meal, and entertainment. Programs such as these, in most cases, determine where an individual can live a higher quality of life at a much lower cost.

Another important factor to consider is the culture of your potential destination. Do you speak the language and if not is learning another language something you are looking for in retirement? Is the culture familiar to you and do you think it would be an enjoyable way of life? Learning another language and/or embracing another type of culture can be a great experience at any point during your lifetime; however it is something that you have to want to do in order to be successful and happy.

Be sure to take a careful look at the economy of the country. Investigate property taxes, real estate costs over the past five years and, predictions that are being made for the next ten years. Examine the markets and the strength of the currency and what kind of factors affects these industries in these particular places.

After carefully studying the economical factors, take a look at the political ones. Make sure that the government is stable and that the basic underlying principles are aligned with your own. Health benefits should be offered to its residents and basic rules and laws are enforced.

Another thing to think about is distance from loved ones. If spending time with your grandchildren during retirement is important to you then moving half way around the world is most likely not your best option. Talk to your family and find out how they feel about your choices and how it is going to affect your relationships with them.

Ideally, vacation for at least a week during different seasons anywhere you're considering retiring. Check out recreation, senior services, entertainment, healthcare and possible social connections in person. You can't always believe what you read or are told. Then, if it is a possibility, rent or lease a place before making a purchase.

Most importantly, think about what you want out of your retirement and if these destinations are going to be able to offer what you need. Choosing a retirement destination is all about choosing the best place for you. These are factors that everyone should take into consideration, but in the end it is about the kind of life style you are looking for and where to go to get it.
